The meaning of a life is defined by what it happens to encounter along its path. We are the people we meet, the places we walk, the ideas we negotiate. The reminiscence of the past, memory and oblivion, the experienced and constructed "once" and "elsewhere" are always composed in a narrative plot that is sought through what remains. A plot that moves freely between the inside and the outside, between an inner and largely unknown self and the individuals and things that contributed to its development.
This book narrates some of the adventures of such a plot. It refers to places, people, and books, but ultimately it has to do with the reconstruction of my own past. Like fragments of an incomplete mosaic, the texts have something in common - they constitute tangible traces of an autobiography that remains open - and in this sense they fall into the trap of every autobiographical writing, which is always trapped in the webs of a subjectivity that dictates its own constructed truths, its own elusive laws.
