Description

The book "Sophocles, the great tragedian" aims to be a springboard for understanding the life, era, and work of a bright individual, Sophocles, who covered almost the entire 5th century, the most glorious in Greek history. Because this was Athens during the time of Sophocles: a "fast lane" of civilization, in which earlier than any other known society, the entire population had acquired regular, substantial, and dynamic participation in public affairs. The edition does not focus on specific philological issues and literary analysis, but rather explores the "what," "how," and "why" of Sophocles' work, connecting the thread of his life with all the social "events" of his time as a system of communicating vessels. Its pages depict not a "jumble of data" and a rhetorical verbosity, where the desired meaning "gets lost like water in a stone," but a map with passages to those events that marked the life and art of Sophocles. Through the "cracks" of history, the author of the work, Eleni Nikolaidou, attempts to reach the "black box" of the work of a person who had the fortune to "condense" so many diverse events in the span of his life. Furthermore, in this book, the reader can find a substantial presentation of the works of the great creator that have remained unchanged over time. And they can easily ascertain that Sophocles is not at all ancient, a kind of fossilized dinosaur. On the contrary, he is very contemporary, as his works reflect reflections and thoughts on the great human problems that accompany us throughout our journey in time.
