Description

'Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.'

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man falsely charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama of the Great Depression and a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition.

One of my favorite books. Even if your English is at a moderate level, dare to read it in the original, because the idioms of the American South add a special color to the writing (they do require a little research, of course). Lee creates excellent characters, with the prominent lawyer Atticus Finch, a plot that gradually builds up from seemingly unrelated events, and, of course, the characters themselves, who are based on real people, and the events she describes are drawn from her childhood memories. It takes us on a journey to the games and mischief of children in the 1930s in the deep American South, with the racism and racial segregation that existed at that time, and indirectly interweaves the plot of a young black man accused of raping a white woman, all seen through the eyes of a young girl.
