Description

In prehistoric times, the mythical king of Athens, Theseus, embarks on a sea journey that will take him to the land of the tal Kyrte, the "free people," a nation of proud and heroic women whom the Greeks called Amazons. The Amazons, fearless in war and united as a fist, harbored distrust for the Greeks and their arrogant civilization.
Thus, when, according to one version of the myth, Queen Hippolyta falls in love with Theseus and flees with him, the entire nation of the Amazons rises in anger. The author vividly narrates the wrath of the Amazons and the tragic outcome of Theseus' union with one of these unique women.
However, "The Last Amazons" is not just a gripping story of love, war, and revenge. Stephen Pressfield has created a series of characters that come to life through the pages: the unique Selene, who, although surrendered to the Greeks, never submitted to her lover, Damon, an Athenian soldier who is fascinated by the primitive customs and traditions of the Amazons; Charito, the narrator of the story, a daughter from an aristocratic family, who was raised by Selene since birth and taught the customs of the Amazons; and of course, Theseus, the tragic king, and Hippolyta, the noble queen who betrayed the tal Kyrte for love.
In a stunning epic inspired by the mythical nation of the Amazons, Pressfield brings to life once again a world lost in the depths of time, conveying to the reader the fire and terror of war. Equally impressive is the way he reconstructs the nation of the Amazons, their people, rituals, and myths, their grandeur and "barbarism," through the frontal clash with "civilization" and conflicting human instincts.
