The "Way" or "Path" that leads to Truth, as considered by Lao Tzu, the "Wise Elder" of ancient China, is seen as a process of inner "purification" or "cleansing" that is more a result of "subtraction" rather than "addition": "By adding something day by day, I can learn many things on the paths of learning. By subtracting something day by day, I can understand everything on the paths of Tao. By subtracting and reducing, until I reach perfect tranquility. And when I reach perfect tranquility, everything seems to happen on its own. With tranquility, I gain the world. On the contrary, when I strive and struggle, in the end I fail." (Tao Te Ching, 48). Due to this simplicity and naturalness, which are the great pursuit of the "Wise Elder", we use the subtitle "The Philosophy of Simplicity" in this edition, which accurately captures the essence of Taoist philosophy.
