[...] The "Treasure" by Eryk Stephanos was a milestone in Greek lexicography and had multiple editions, despite its disadvantages, which were the inclusion of passages from ancient authors without precise references - simple mention of the author's name or even the title of their work - and the etymological, rather than alphabetical, arrangement of the entries.
However, these aforementioned disadvantages cannot diminish the great value of the work and its contribution to Greek lexicography, considering the number of entries - more than one hundred thousand - many of which were discovered for the first time. This becomes even more understandable when we take into account that at the time the "Treasure" was compiled, an original monumental work, there were no standardized editions of ancient authors. This meant that Eryk Stephanos collected the fragments of his "Treasure" from a few printed sources and many manuscripts, traveling to all the major cities of Europe and begging princes and rulers for financial support, as the cost of the work was very high and it cost him his entire fortune.
