Description
It is not enough to only gaze at the light, but we must also search in the darkness. To admire what remains, but also imagine what has been lost, and what is behind the surface of things. Certainly, the great temples and masterpieces of architecture are what always attracted people's attention and fueled the tourism industry. But there are also other places, less glamorous, squares where ancient crowds (masters and slaves) gathered and arcades that echoed with the voices of merchants and small traders. There, the few determined walkers move silently today, ready to confront the lesser mysteries of foundations, the technique of drainage, the ingenuity of "small" urban planning.
... However, we all would like to secretly peek into a crack in history at that old adventure with the sea-worn galleys, carriages, mules, trunks, uniforms, shiny bronze tools, easels, painters, cartographers, protectors thieves, suspicious servants, self-taught archaeologists, imaginative writers, consuls, agents and messengers, the crazy monk who opened the door, the villager who hid the hand of Aphrodite, and that foolish castle guard who threw all the keys into the sea.
"Phaistos is a magical place, open, free, imposing with a melancholic tranquility and above all familiar. Knossos, on the other hand, as the most famous, is trapped in the parallel circles of multiple narratives and interpretive constraints to which a global projector constantly subjects it, seeking to see all the truths, those hidden behind the make-up of the controversial restoration of Evans, and those still underground promising new revelations...
Phaistos looks towards the sea, a sea so close that at times you feel the salt and the rhythmic sound of the waves on your skin, a sea also so distant as the yellow coast of Libya behind the sparse palm trees that sprout among the fields. Here is the border with Europe, but Phaistos looks towards Africa, searching for the Nile with its papyri and its secret sources, searching for the blue monkeys and the griffins described by the imaginative sailors, searching for Aphrodite who occasionally emerges naked, innocent and unsuspecting on the backs of dolphins, sailors, and shells".
