Georg Lukács is one of the leading intellectual figures of the 20th century, not only for the breadth of his knowledge and the depth of his theoretical approaches, but also because his work represents a meeting point for some of the most important currents of thought in recent times. In his intellectual journey, one can clearly recognize the influences of romanticism, phenomenology, and especially Marxism, in a series of theoretical elaborations that are related, to a greater or lesser extent, to his political adventures.
The texts of distinguished scholars collected in this volume highlight the multifaceted character of Lukács' work in the fields of philosophy, aesthetics, and political theory. They allow us to reconstruct the colorful mosaic of an entire era in the history of ideas, as well as in that of social and political movements.
The appendix of the edition presents two separate documents: a chronicle of Lukács' tumultuous and decisive relationship with another sacred monster of Western Marxism, Ernst Bloch; and (for the first time in Greece) a series of excerpts from his youthful diary, which bring to light the biographical background of his work.
