Description

[...] The present study aims primarily to cover, even to a small extent, the gap that exists in Greek literature regarding the history of the Caucasus, its peoples, and the problems of the region. However, its main purpose is to contribute to the understanding of Turkish foreign policy towards the North Caucasus and the three independent democracies of Transcaucasia. The analysis of Turkish regional policy can offer useful conclusions about the long-term goals of the Turkish military bureaucracy towards neighboring countries and the ideological principles that guide Turkish diplomacy.
Additionally, the study aims to analyze the regional policies of Russia, Iran, the United States, European states, and Israel. The examination of the role of major powers in the Caucasus will provide some useful insights into foreign policy towards Turkey. Especially in the case of the United States, which is the sole superpower in the post-Cold War era, it is impossible to interpret their stance towards Ankara without making a full reference to the convergence of American and Turkish interests in the Caspian Sea.
