Description
Love is undoubtedly a biblical, Judeo-Christian idea. Islam inherited it from the Bible. The important thing about love is, of course, to practice it, but it also has great spiritual significance, against the general everyday nihilism, and to talk about it, to try to understand it. There are many questions: how distinct are the love for God and the love for fellow human beings? Is one possible without the other? Does love require faith? Is the love for enemies in the synoptic Gospels and the love for one another in the fourth Gospel the same? Is the love for enemies, which denies self-preservation and goes as far as sacrifice, ultimately an ethical proposal that risks remaining perpetually unrealized? What is the relationship between love and related ideas, values, or emotions, both in the pre-Christian and non-Christian world (eros, friendship) and in the Christian world (mercy, philanthropy)? Finally, is it possible to translate love into a collective socio-political act, or should it always remain within interpersonal boundaries, under penalty of self-annulment?
