The path of Sociology of Education in Greece has been complex and often encountered significant obstacles. Perhaps the most important of these is the confusion of its scientific identity and research subject with the epistemological perspectives and research approaches of other educational sciences. However, the scientific field of Sociology of Education in Greece and internationally has highlighted a significant variety of research fields and methodological tools. The science of Sociology has its own conceptual and methodological arsenal, as does the field of Sociology of Education.
In the book you are holding in your hands, we have tried to substantiate the epistemological foundation of Sociology of Education, to present as analytically as possible its basic sociological theories, and to develop some of the issues that concern Sociology of Education, which we consider important. Obviously, no book can be exhaustive, nor can we as authors claim that we have achieved such a thing. However, we have systematically and persistently tried to meet the goals we set and we hope, at least, to clarify what Sociology of Education studies and how.
