Description

Democracy is defined in this book as the tautological equivalent of universal freedom. In this sense, democracy tends towards the proprietary formation of the socio-economic and political system, because it creates power relationships that undermine freedom in the private sphere. Democracy opposes the anti-representative and, indeed, the pre-representative system that the world experiences today. The approach to democracy as freedom implies a clear differentiation of the political system from the state. When the state embodies the political system, the state is inherently undemocratic. The democratic principle calls for the embodiment of the state by the social body of citizens. Therefore, democracy presupposes the abolition of the division of socio-economic and political tasks that arises from "contracts" of power and, consequently, the differentiation of the political from the social. It also highlights the identity multiplicity of the groups that are called upon to be formed with autonomy as their hallmark. The approach to democracy as freedom reveals that the proclamations of modernity, such as those of the "civil society", "governance", "participatory democracy", etc., are obviously undemocratic, as they do not negate and rather reinforce the foundational basis of the pre-representative system. The author examines the applications of the democratic principle within the framework of the Greek world system, as well as its prospects in view of the transition to the digital era. In this sense, phenomena such as "globalization" are evaluated in relation to the universal anthropocentric phenomenon and not based on the ideological choice of the dominant world of modernity.
