Description

- [...] Many of these moments of childhood are expressed through animation. What did you find appealing about this modern form of storytelling? What is it like to create with a medium that does not have a long tradition in Greece?
- I don't just live in Greece. I live in Greece in the age of the Internet. And I don't do animation, but Flash animation. I manage a platform of moving images at the exact moment that the whole world starts to deal with it, because Flash is a completely new software that came to solve a series of problems and contradictions related to the Internet itself. Since the '90s, the communities of connected users and especially artists envisioned the immediate spread of moving images, but this was not possible because the files were huge. Every time you wanted to watch a video, for example, it was like trying to pass a wardrobe through the eye of a needle. The innovation of Flash, similar to that of YouTube, which was created only in 2005, was to make something possible for which we were already ready. We were globally familiar with moving images because of television. What is happening today with platforms like Flash and YouTube is proving that there is a second "mother" language, understandable and manageable from all corners of the globe. We are now speaking on the Network with moving images, and every time we do this, even in a clumsy way, we practically challenge the dominance of the television device.

- Have you thought about how these animations will be in a few decades?
- Like low-tech digital haikus, I hope, but I haven't imagined it because I am trapped in the absolute now. [...]
