Description

The volume on popular culture and tradition of Pontus is the work of 28 specialized researchers, scientists, and university professors under the coordination of Associate Professor of Folklore at the Department of Language, Philology, and Culture of the Black Sea Countries at the Democritus University of Thrace, Mr. Manolis G. Sergis.

It is part of the series "Greek Places and Cultures" by "Alitheia" publications and was designed with a dual purpose:
- To serve as a step of knowledge for every Greek citizen, but also as a stimulus for the promotion of folklore studies around the rich popular culture of Pontus.
- To serve as a reliable academic aid for specialized knowledge, teaching, and study of Pontian folklore.

In this work, unprecedented for the data so far - similar efforts in the past were limited to unambiguous and usually historical recordings and testimonies about Pontus and the Pontian Hellenism - aspects of the folk tradition of Asia Minor Pontus and the formation of the new identity of the Pontians who came to Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922 and the population exchange, within the framework of the Treaty of Lausanne, in 1923, are examined. The tradition of the Pontians who were incorporated within the boundaries of the former Soviet Union and resettled in Greece during the last decades of the 20th century is also examined.

The relevant studies include all the expressions of a traditional cultural system. That is, both the material and social, as well as the spiritual life, in the great variety of their individual manifestations.

It is therefore evident that this scientific work will remind the older ones, but also teach the younger ones about the folk tradition of Pontian Hellenism, one of the most dynamic and most martyric parts of our Nation.

In my estimation, the volume on the folklore of Pontus by "Alitheia" publications is a real tool of national and cultural self-awareness, in a time of critical rearrangements and boundary historical and cultural transformations in our wider region. Because it contributes to the preservation of memory. And it is, at the same time, an answer to those tendencies and voices that seek - or even try to impose - the systematic distortion of history.
