The "GIS: Theory and Practice" was written to be a reference point in the Greek literature of GIS. It is a book that captures and redefines the richness and variety of GIS in an easily understandable way. It serves as a clearly defined gateway to the fascinating world of Geographic Information Systems. "GIS: Theory and Practice" is unique in Greek and foreign literature because:
- It is based on the scientific approach of feedback that leads to the logic of successive steps in the examination of scientific areas. Specifically, the presentation of the book's material follows the well-known methodological framework for GIS: Data Input, Data Management, Spatial Analysis, and Cartographic Representation.
- Its philosophy differs from the simplistic and one-dimensional approach of other books that treat GIS as purely a technocratic object. We believe that practice cannot be justified without the existence of theory, just as theory cannot substantiate its usefulness without its flawless application. Therefore, the first chapter of the book, as well as the first section of each chapter, is dedicated to the scientific justification of what follows.
- Its fundamental principle is that GIS is a fundamental and inseparable component of spatial planning, just as solving modern problems should now be considered as a process of managing and analyzing spatial data.
"GIS: Theory and Practice" is characterized by the following:
- It guides the reader step by step not only in learning the new ArcGIS 10 software but mainly in how to solve geographic problems using GIS. It is a guide to the application of the various functions of GIS, with the help of ArcGIS 10, for which there is a series of exercises that the reader is called to solve, guided step by step with a series of illustrated instructions.
- It meets the needs of both users who simply wish to fully understand, through simple and well-designed steps, this new tool (ArcGIS 10), as well as those who wish to delve deeper and further develop their involvement with GIS, with the help of more specialized functions and applications.
- All data and exercises relate to the Greek territory and specifically to problems faced by our country, with the aim of reflecting the Greek reality (e.g. Greek Projection Systems).
- All exercises and data have been tested in the context of the educational process of teaching GIS in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as in training seminars of the Geography and Spatial Analysis Laboratory of the NTUA.
