Description

What is anti-Americanism? Is it a "justified reaction," an "irrational prejudice" against the US, or a "distorted perception" of them? Is it opposition to specific US policies, and therefore opposition with a contingent character? Or is it a total opposition to what the so-called American model represents? Is there, ultimately, a commonly accepted definition of anti-Americanism?

Regarding anti-Americanism in Greece, the question arises whether it is an exception in the European context, another Greek peculiarity and/or pathology, or if it is registered as a norm within a broader phenomenon unfolding in Western Europe during the post-war period and is directly related to the conduct of the ideological confrontation during the Cold War (1947-1989). There is also an attempt to correlate it with the respective meaning of national independence, the enemy, and Americanism, as well as to explore it through the different shades of right-wing, centrist, and left-wing discourse. Its examination from the aftermath of the Truman Doctrine until 1989 follows the intense transformations of Greek political and social history, shedding light particularly on the elements of continuity and discontinuity between the post-civil war period and the Metapolitefsi.

With extensive reference to the cultural dimension of anti-Americanism, the reception and resonance of the American dream, reactions to otherness and criminality, the condemnation of moral extremism, but also the discovery of another America, interest gradually shifts from the question of what anti-Americanism is to what functions it serves and how it is involved in the process of constructing political, social, and cultural identities in post-dictatorship Greece.
