Description
Memories from the life of Greeks in Egypt from 1930 to 1960. The small Greek community of Zagazig, a city in the Nile Delta, and the close contact with Egyptians. The narrative goes through the Greek community and the schools to the agreements and pilgrimage to Mecca as well as the celebrations of Ramadan, outlines the Greek engineer for irrigation, the priest, the Egyptian barber, the cafes, the small joys and sorrows, the belly dance, Greek and Egyptian doctors, the outdoor cinemas.
Next is the intellectual cosmopolitan Alexandria (Greek and Egyptian writers, philosophers, artists) with a central reference to the Greek element, with schools, associations, and other social events. Images of Alexandria in the mid-20th century from the perspective of youth with their defining experiences. The phase of decline of Hellenism as well as other foreign communities. Also, personal memories and assessments from the Middle East movement of 1944.
The scenery changes in the last part of the book. The references are no longer experiential, but the narrative turns into an original essay with scientific demands. It attempts another voyage of Egypt, with a comprehensive analysis of Greek presence, from the 3rd century BC to the 21st century, in literature, arts, sciences, religion, from the time when Alexander drew the plan of Alexandria with wheat grains to the hymns that ascend today to the heavens in the Greek language from the Monastery of St. Catherine in Sinai. Topics include the Museum and the Library, cultural continuity, philosophical quests, Neoplatonists, the diffusion of the Greek language, Christianity, the stream of Arabs, translations of Greek texts into Arabic, the Copts.
