The most common styling mistakes in men's clothing and how to avoid them

Recently, I found myself at a table where the men in the group started asking me for style advice.

At first, I refused because most of the time, no matter what you tell them, they don't pay the slightest attention, but then I gave in, or maybe I just got tired of seeing them make so many mistakes in their daily outfits. That's how I started to notice what they were wearing and concluded that a guide to the most common mistakes is very important.

Before I started listing them, I consulted some friends, who also shared their thoughts on the styling mistakes they observe in men's clothing. After promising them better days without deep V-necks, faded jeans, and unfortunate color combinations, I prepared a guide to avoid the most frequent styling mistakes.

Let's take a look!

Combining Black with Blue

I thought some things had disappeared over time, like the combination of black with blue. And when we say blue, we mean dark blue. That shade that is so dark that you think it’s black, but it’s not because it remains blue. Something that many men struggle to distinguish. The high percentage of color blindness in men certainly plays a role, making it difficult for them to tell if it’s blue or black, but perhaps a good solution is to ask for a second opinion.

Black can only be combined with blue if it’s electric blue, turquoise, or any other shade that stands out from black.

Shirts with Deep V-neck

A few years ago, a type of shirt with a huge V-neck (“Vee”) appeared, seemingly from some distant planet. For some reason, many men choose t-shirts in this design, but we don’t find them flattering at all. On the contrary, it’s something that repels us. Opt for a neckline with a discreet V-neck or a crew neck that doesn’t leave such a large part of the chest uncovered.

Linen Pants with a Fabric Shirt

We all know that linen is a special type of fabric. When it’s not on a tablecloth or curtain, it’s usually used in summer men's clothing, which is quite cool. However, many men make the mistake of combining linen pants with a fabric shirt or vice versa. Unfortunately, no! Linen pants should be paired with a linen shirt, otherwise, it loses all its uniqueness. In general, prefer it only for summer weddings because it is no longer considered “in fashion.”

Good Suit with Wrong Shoes

In more formal occasions, such as at a wedding or a baptism, even in an important meeting at the office or a personal appointment, the dress code is usually formal.

This means jackettrousersshirt and suitable shoes. I have often noticed someone wearing a good suit, but with the wrong shoes or socks. Official attire should not be combined with casual shoes or athletic and short socks that leave the ankle exposed.

Torn jeans with patches

This year, torn, distressed jeans have made a comeback, as well as those with countless patches. They have returned, but for women and not for men. What does this mean? Wearing the heavily torn jeans with patches is not flattering, as it makes the outfit look sloppy and unkempt. It would be better to avoid it.

Tracksuits and sneakers at the office

Jobs vary widely, we all know that. Somewhere the attire will be overly formal and somewhere more casual. However, in office jobs, there is a common dress code that definitely does not include the athletic look. Even when you have Casual Friday, tracksuits and your favorite sneakers are not an option. For relaxed Fridays, opt for a comfortable chino pants, your favorite T-shirt, and a pair of trendy sneakers.

Pants with espadrilles

A very common phenomenon during the summer months is jeans paired with flip-flops or espadrilles. To the men reading this text, know that most, if not all, women disagree with this style choice. If you want to wear flip-flops or espadrilles, I suggest you prefer a bermuda instead.

White belts

Accessories for men are generally misunderstood. Not necessarily for the better, as there are very nice bags, even jewelry that can complement an outfit. However, sometimes some go overboard by wearing a white belt or white shiny shoes. It would be better for belts to remain classic brown or black. As for shoes, white is only allowed in canvas sneakers for a more classic collegiate look.

Avoid them instead!

Waist Bag

For the end, I saved my favorite, which is the banana or otherwise the waist bag. I usually notice it on older men, but that doesn't mean I don't want everyone to be well-dressed. So let all the bananas in the world disappear and be replaced with wonderful backpacks that are available on the market. Sporty and casual designs will make your life easier, while you will also have more space for your favorite items.

These were the most important style mistakes that men constantly make. Many of you may consider us harsh and say that we pay attention to things that don't matter, but no. We like to have a well-dressed man next to us, just as you do!
