Find the best laptop for simple everyday use (Buying Guide)

If you want a laptop to spend your time surfing the internet or doing simple tasks like using Excel, here you will learn the essentials to make the right choice!

Software

Let's start with the 2 main types of software you will encounter in laptops that are for simple everyday use.

Windows

The Windows operating system is the most common, familiar to the majority of users, and provides open access to applications. With Windows software, you will find the widest range of laptops in terms of appearance, features, and price range.

Chrome OS

This is the Google software, which is designed for systems with low specifications and power consumption, and is mainly intended for browsing the Internet and social media.

Skroutz Tip: If you don't have the necessary knowledge, avoid models that have Linux or don't have an operating system in general.

Hardware

CPU

The CPU is the 'brain' of the computer and all processes are executed from it. If you just want to browse or maintain documents, an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 (the 2 main brands) will be satisfactory. On the other hand, if you want to run multiple programs simultaneously such as Excel, Word, and Powerpoint, opt for Intel Core i5 and AMD Ryzen 5.

RAM Memory

It determines the volume of information and parallel tasks that the computer can manage / execute simultaneously at a given time. Like with the CPU, if you just want to consume content and be on social media, 4GB RAM is enough. Additionally, if you want to invest in something more powerful in case you need to run heavier programs in the future, there are many affordable options with 8GB RAM, for improved speed.

Hard Drive

If you want to store songs and photos, a Laptop with storage space of 128GB or 256GB will meet your needs. In case you want to have your movie library on your computer, then opt for 512GB for greater comfort.

Skroutz Tip: Don't worry about the graphics card, as most processors have an integrated graphics card for the needs you are trying to cover.

Usage Processor RAM Hard Drive
Browsing / Social Media / Movies Ryzen 3 / Core i3 4GB 256GB
Multiple tasks simultaneously Ryzen 5 / Core i5 8GB 512GB

Screen

Size

Choose something between 14 - 15.6 inches to combine viewing comfort with portability, as usually, a smaller screen means a less bulky device. On the other hand, if you are on the go all day and want to have your laptop with you everywhere, there are options with screen smaller than 13.6”, but keep in mind that smaller size usually means a smaller battery. Finally, if your laptop is intended for home use and mainly for watching movies and series, you can choose a model with screen larger than 16”.

Resolution

Our advice is that if you intend it for video and movies, prefer a FHD screen, as it offers satisfactory image quality at reasonable prices. Higher resolutions, such as 4K, do not make much sense as they are for models with very powerful hardware mainly aimed at gaming and video editing.
