Buying Guide for Comforters: Find the Best One for You

Are you looking for a duvet and don't know which one to choose? Let's see their basic characteristics and how to find the best one, based on your needs!

1. Quilt Fabric

It is durable and easily absorbs and releases moisture.

Cotton Satin

Cotton fabric that is particularly soft to the touch, smooth, and glossy.

Percale

Cotton fabric with a dense weave and a matte appearance. Cool and durable, easy to iron.

Flannel

Cotton fabric with a dense weave and a surface like fluff. Ideal for winter months.

Microfiber

Synthetic material (artificial microfibers) that allows the quilt to be lightweight, warm, and fluffy.

2. Filling

There are 4 types of quilts, based on the filling material.

Feather

Want it to be as warm as possible without being too heavy?

Feather quilts are an excellent choice for winter, as they provide insulation and warmth, as it is "trapped" between the feathers and thus functions as a natural insulating material.

Wool

Natural and hypoallergenic material that retains warmth but also "breathes", making it warm in winter and cool in summer.

Have you ever wondered why grandparents choose woolen shirts in the summer? Here's the answer!

Microfiber

Artificial microfibers that allow the quilt to be lightweight, warm, and fluffy.

Hollow fiber

Synthetic material (artificial microfibers) with gaps in the weave that allow the quilt to breathe, be lightweight, and fluffy.

3. Quilt Dimensions

Size: Dimensions:
                      Single                 160x220 cm
                      Double                 180x240 cm
                      Queen                 200x240 cm
                      King                 220x240 cm
King Size                 240x260 cm (and in some cases 230x250 cm)

#SkroutzTip

Always calculate the duvet to be at least 40-50 centimeters wider than your bed for greater comfort!

4. Thermal performance

In many duvets, their thermal performance, that is how warm they are, is measured in TOG (Thermal Overall Grade), which can start from 3, which are the coolest duvets, and reach 15, which are the warmest.

For a house with heating, duvets with sufficient heating from 8 to 10.5 tog are a good choice, while if it is colder, choose from 11 tog and above.

5. Duvet weight

The weight of the duvet is measured in GSM (grams per square meter) and plays a role in comfort, but also to some extent in warmth. However, a heavier duvet does not necessarily mean that it will be warmer.

What is it intended for?

Check the features that you should pay more attention to, based on the intended use.

For the cold winter

Choose a down duvet, with TOG >11 and a flannel or 100% cotton cover for a super cozy feeling.

And if you have allergies, choose a duvet with high TOG (>11) filled with microfibers and fabric made of 100% cotton, for a super soft feeling.

For autumn/spring

Choose a lightweight wool or hollowfiber duvet that breathes, so you can minimize the chances of sweating, with TOG < 8. For covering, you can choose cotton satin or percale.

Care

Down duvet

Fluff the duvet daily to allow it to ventilate and maintain the volume of the down. If allowed, wash according to the manufacturer's instructions. Prefer hand washing or use a washing machine with a delicate program.

Wool duvet

Fluff the duvet frequently to maintain the volume of the wool. Hand washing is preferable, but if you use a washing machine, choose a program with a very low temperature and a special detergent for wool. Avoid using a dryer and let it dry naturally.

Microfiber duvets

Wash it in the washing machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. Usually, you can use a warm program. Microfiber duvets often dry faster!

Don't forget! Many times there may be a difference in a product based on its overall characteristics and construction. Before making a decision, read reviews from other users to see their opinion too!
