The history of the safety zone!

The history of the safety zone!

When in 1959 Volvo invented the seat belts as we know them today (the three-point seat belt), they made the patent free for everyone!

And rival companies could use it in their cars, because as Volvo had said "it is more important to save lives than profit"!

THE SEATBELT SAVES LIVES AND THE PHASE IS AS FOLLOWS!

In case our car stops abruptly because an accident happened, we will be propelled from our seat at the same speed we were running! So, if we were going at 200 km/h, it is logical to become a thousand pieces afterwards.

So the seatbelt holds our body from being propelled at a high speed but it is also elastic enough not to cut our abdomen while we are flying.

In America alone, it is estimated that the seatbelt saves 15,000 lives from traffic accidents every year. (An entire population of Mykonos along with the pelicans!)

The first seatbelt was not invented for a car, but for an airplane!

The British engineer George Cayley made the first seatbelts ever for his airplane in the mid-19th century.

It may sound extreme, but think about the fact that cars became popular in the next century! So the phase of falling off cliffs with flying devices hoping to stay in the air for a few minutes definitely needed a little belt!

Seatbelts for cars were invented 60 years after the invention of the car!

The first modern car was built in 1886 by the German inventor Karl Benz. However, the first retractable seatbelts for cars were invented in 1946 by the doctor Hunter Shelden, because he was concerned about the increased number of injuries from car accidents that he observed in the intensive care unit!

The first recorded car accident happened 125 years ago!

So, in 1891, in Ohio, USA, a car crashed into a tree, but fortunately the passengers came out clean with just a few scratches! (If this tree still exists, it is a very important tree!)

The first car accident happened a few years later, in 1896.

An Englishwoman was crossing the road (it was not very common to "look left and right before crossing the road!") and was hit by a car, in which the passengers were taking a driving test (this is where the "L" for learner drivers comes in handy).

IMAGINE HOW EXTREME IT IS TO BE THE FIRST VICTIM OF SUCH A REVOLUTIONARY INVENTION LIKE THE CAR!

COOL FACT

The first mandatory law for seatbelt use was introduced in 1970 in Australia! THAT RECENTLY!

Africa is the continent with the most car accidents per year, due to very relaxed road safety laws!

Monaco is the country with the fewest car accidents! The rates are 0 deaths per 100,000 people!

In Greece, car accidents decrease every year!

In Greece, traffic accidents were at their peak in 2006 and then started to decrease steadily, with the exception of 2016 when they slightly increased.

(Because this "6" doesn't suit us well, in 2026 be more careful on the roads!)

In fact, in 2016 when we had this strange increase in traffic accidents, it was also the last year I remember there being a fuss about such an accident on television, specifically with Pantelis Pantelidis! (What a year 2016 was!)

It is estimated that most car accidents happen on Saturdays! (It's more likely to go out and drink on Saturdays, so it's logical!)

SEAT BELTS IN THE BACK SEATS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Although I don't want this post to sound like a campaign for road safety, it's generally good to remember to wear a seat belt even when sitting in the back! Otherwise, in case of an accident, we get ejected and become a ball and hit the people in the front, thus increasing the chances of getting hurt!
